Cricket's Three Formats — a Betting Perspective

Each format plays differently, so the market strategy differs too. Knowing which markets are available in each format makes decision-making easier.

T20

Just 20 overs per side — results shift quickly, making live betting especially popular here. BPL, IPL and T20 World Cup matches attract the most bets across Bangladesh.

Fast Results

ODI

In 50-over ODI matches, total runs, session betting and top performer markets are more widely available. ODI betting is most varied during the ICC World Cup and bilateral series.

Session Betting

Test

In a five-day Test match, a draw is possible, so you can bet on three outcomes — Team A wins, Team B wins, or draw. Innings margin is also a market.

Which tournaments do Bangladeshis bet on?

BPL (Bangladesh Premier League) is the most popular among Bangladeshi bettors as it is the home tournament. IPL markets also remain active for a large part of the year. Beyond that, betting interest is highest for the ICC T20 World Cup and bilateral series featuring the Tigers.

Football betting is also popular — but unlike cricket, draws are common here, so the market structure is different. The main market in football is 1×2 (home/draw/away), whereas cricket offers far more runs-based and player-based markets.

At mag, alongside cricket, slot games are also a favourite for many players — especially during match intervals.

Popular Cricket Betting Markets

These are the most widely used markets. A basic understanding of how each one works makes betting more straightforward.

Match Winner

Pick which team will win the match. In T20 and ODI there are only two outcomes; in Test there are three. The simplest market.

Most Popular

Toss Winner

The result is known before the match starts — bet on whether Team A or Team B will win the toss.

Quick Settlement

Top Batsman

Who will score the most runs in a given innings? You pick one specific player for this market.

Player Market

Total Runs Over/Under

Choose whether the total runs in an innings will be above (over) or below (under) a set number.

Numbers Based

Method of First Wicket

Bowled, caught, run out — the way the first wicket falls is a separate specialist market.

Specialist Market

Multi Bet

Combine multiple matches or events into a single bet. All selections must be correct to win — odds multiply and grow.

Higher Returns

An example of a multi bet

Say three separate selections have decimal odds of 1.40, 1.60 and 1.90. Combining all three gives total odds of 1.40 × 1.60 × 1.90 = 4.26 (approx).

With a ৳100 stake, if all three selections are correct the return is ৳426. If even one is wrong, the full ৳100 is lost. A multi bet is a form of entertainment — a profit is not guaranteed.

Three Ways to Read Odds

The same odds for the same match can be written in three ways. The example below shows the same number for a Team A win bet in all three formats.

Decimal
2.25 — a ৳1,000 bet returns ৳2,250 in total (profit ৳1,250 + original stake ৳1,000). If you lose, ৳1,000 is gone.
Fractional
5/4 — ৳5 profit for every ৳4 staked. A ৳1,000 bet yields ৳1,250 profit, with ৳2,250 returned in total.
American
+125 — a positive number shows how much profit a ৳100 bet brings. A ৳1,000 bet yields ৳1,250 profit, ৳2,250 total.

Example for the favourite — Team B win odds: 1.80 (decimal) = 4/5 (fractional) = −125 (American). A negative American number shows how much you must stake to win ৳100. A ৳1,000 bet returns ৳1,800 in total (profit ৳800).

Live In-Play Betting — Odds Shift the Moment a Wicket Falls

LIVE

How markets work while a match is in progress

In-play betting means you can place bets after the match has started. When a wicket falls, the match winner odds for the batting team immediately lengthen — because their chances of winning have decreased. If the next batsman scores quickly, the odds can come back down.

At the end of each over, odds are automatically updated based on the run rate. If the runs still needed in the final overs are high, the defending team's odds shorten. These shifts keep betting moving in step with the match.

In-play betting requires a reliable internet connection, as there is little time to decide. To learn about the mag app, visit the mag App page.

  • Run rates are higher in powerplay overs — odds change more frequently.
  • In death overs (last 4–5 overs), once the target is clear the odds tend to stabilise.
  • An injury to the wicketkeeper or a key bowler can shift the odds.

Practical Tips for Cricket Betting

Betting is a form of entertainment. Keeping the following points in mind will help make the experience enjoyable.

  • Focus on one format. T20, ODI or Test — each has its own pace. Concentrating on one makes it easier to understand the markets.
  • Set your budget beforehand. Decide how much you will stake before the match starts — it is better not to change that decision mid-match.
  • Keep multi bets small. The more selections you add, the lower the chance of winning. 2–3 selections is enough.
  • Watch the pitch and weather. The chance of rain or a slow pitch directly affects total runs markets.
  • Do not rush in live markets. In-play betting moves fast. Make your decision once the odds have settled.
  • Follow responsible betting practices. Betting is not a way to recover losses — it is entertainment. Read the responsible gaming guidelines for more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, there are significant differences. T20 mainly offers match winner, total runs, number of sixes and live over markets. ODI adds session betting and partnership runs markets. In Test cricket, a draw is possible so you can bet on three outcomes, and markets like innings margin or follow-on are also available.

Neither is better — all three formats carry the same information, just written differently. In Bangladesh, decimal odds are more commonly used on most platforms because the calculation is straightforward: odds × stake = total return. Example: if Team A's odds are 2.25, a ৳1,000 bet returns ৳2,250 in total.

If a match is abandoned or results in No Result, bets are generally cancelled and the original stake is returned. If a result is determined by the DLS method, most markets settle normally. Full rules for each market are detailed on the terms and conditions page.

Yes, there are a few major differences. Football has a fixed duration (90 minutes), while cricket is defined by overs or days. The main market in football is 1×2 (home/draw/away), whereas T20 and ODI cricket have no draw. Cricket has a far wider variety of player-based markets (top batsman, top bowler). In in-play betting, odds can shift with every ball.

Odds update immediately after key events such as a wicket, boundary or six. At the end of each over, odds are also reassessed based on the run rate. Live betting therefore requires a fast connection and the ability to make quick decisions. mag's mobile app shows live scores and odds together.
